U4GM - 6 Rune Optimization Tips for Mid-Game Builds in Elden Ring

As someone who’s spent well over 100 hours exploring the Lands Between, I’ve learned that surviving mid-game in Elden Ring isn’t just about dodging better or hitting harder—it’s also about spending and managing your Runes wisely. By mid-game, you’ve likely unlocked a few legacy dungeons, beaten some key bosses, and hit that point where leveling starts to demand more and more Runes. Here's where optimization becomes crucial.

Whether you’re a spell-slinging mage or a bleed-focused warrior, these six tips will help you make the most of your Elden Ring Runes during this pivotal stage of your journey.

1. Prioritize Stat Efficiency Based on Your Build

At mid-game, many players fall into the trap of spreading their stats too thin. I made this mistake on my first playthrough, overinvesting in Mind for a melee build that barely used Ashes of War. Runes are too valuable to waste on suboptimal scaling. Focus on the core stats that give you the best return—like Dexterity for katanas or Intelligence for sorceries—and avoid overleveling Vigor or Endurance unless it’s build-critical.

2. Invest in Smithing Materials—Not Just Levels

It’s tempting to dump Runes into levels, but weapon upgrades often provide a more noticeable boost in damage. On my second run, I started buying Smithing Stones consistently from vendors after unlocking Bell Bearings. The result? A +15 weapon that let me cut through Liurnia and Altus Plateau enemies with ease. Optimize by buying what boosts your damage directly—not just your stats.

3. Know When to Buy and When to Farm

There are moments in Elden Ring where grinding becomes tedious. That’s when I started exploring elden ring runes for sale as a time-saving option. Especially during NG+ or hybrid build experimentation, purchasing Runes can help bypass repetitive farming zones and focus more on progression or PvP build crafting. Used wisely, it's an efficient tool—not a crutch.

4. Bank Runes Before Exploring Dangerous Areas

Mid-game introduces areas like Volcano Manor and Nokron, where sudden deaths are frequent. Before heading into these high-risk zones, I always visit the Roundtable Hold or a safe Site of Grace to level up or buy gear. Losing 100,000 Runes to a trap is something that sticks with you. Avoid that pain by banking Runes in advance.

5. Optimize Gear with Rune Investment

Don’t underestimate how Rune spending can optimize your gear. I had better success improving my talismans, upgrading my Spirit Ashes (like Lhutel or Mimic Tear), and buying specialty gear from quest-related NPCs than simply grinding for levels. For example, investing in a +10 Latenna helped me melt mid-game bosses from a distance while I tanked.

6. Plan for Build Scaling

If you’re building toward a specific late-game weapon—like the Dark Moon Greatsword or Rivers of Blood—start prepping now. That means allocating stats that won’t pay off until later but will make your transition smoother. During my faith/dex run, I started boosting Faith early so I could wield the Erdtree Seal once I acquired it, instead of having to farm levels under pressure.

The mid-game in Elden Ring is where your choices start to carry weight. Optimizing how you earn, spend, and safeguard your Runes can be the difference between coasting through a boss or struggling for hours. Speaking from experience, applying these strategies has saved me countless headaches—and Runes.

Take the time to reflect on your current build and future goals. Then make sure every Rune you collect works toward getting you there.
